Jigme Taring is the eldest son of Raja Taring, the Maharaja of Sikkim. He married Rinchen Dolma Taring, Daughter of Tsarong. He was drafted into the regiment set up by Thupten Kunphel, who works for the 13th Dalai Lama, and was sent to Gyantse for his military training.

In 1932 he was appointed commander of the Tibetan Army (Dzasak .He served as a senior Tibetan government official for 18 years in Lhasa.  He later became an English teacher to the young 14th Dalai Lama.
